Fleece ponchos are yet another simple to make craft that both young and old can do. Obviously one of the great features of fleece is that it does not fray which means you do not have to sew the edges of the material unless you want to for appearance purposes.
Here we have a super easy to make a no sew fleece poncho which will only cost you a few dollars. Your kids will love these as they are so soft, snuggly and warm, in fact not just your kids will love these fleece ponchos but even your friends and family.
To make a fleece poncho we will need:
A pair of sharp craft scissors
A bowl
A measuring tape or ruler
Firstly you will need to purchase the fleece material from your local fabric store or if your in no hurry you can order in online and have it delivered. You should look to purchase around 3/4 yard of fleece for toddlers and a 1 yard of fleece for bigger kids, this will enable you to make 2 fleece ponchos.
Lay out the fleece flat and then proceed to cut it in half. You want to cut each half of the fleece into the shape of a square. If you are making the fleece poncho for a toddler then you will need the square to be roughly 27 by 27 inches with larger kids requiring 30 by 30 inches square.
Take one of the pieces of fleece that you have cut and fold it in half diagonally, making sure to match all corners and edges together.
Take your measuring tape and find the centre of the fabric as this is where you will be cutting the hole for your head in the fleece poncho. Once you have found the centre of the fleece then you need to mark around 3 inches from the center on either side of the centre that you have marked.
Now cut a half circle on the folded edge where you have marked. This is where you can use the bowel as a guide to help you cut the half circle.
Now open up the poncho and lay it flat on the floor. Now take your scissors and make cuts along the edges of the fleece all around the fleece (approx 2 inches long).
Now you can tie a little knot in those pieces of fringe to make it look nicer or for an even better effect you can slip on a couple of beads before you tie the know.
And there you have your fleece poncho. Very easy to make and it not only looks good but will keep the kids warm on those cold winter nights.
Quick Tip #1
Make sure that you never wash your Fleece products in hot water. You should only wash it in 30 to 40°C or else you will risk damaging the material |
Quick Tip #2
polar fleece is made by twisting fibre into yarns, which are then knitted into another fabric. This fabric is then vigorously brushed to loosen up some of the fibres which then gives you the fuzzy look that is often associated with Fleece products. |
